Troops of Operation HADIN KAI have repelled an attempted attack by Islamic State West Africa Province, ISWAP, terrorists on a military base in Biu Local Government Area of Borno State.
The attack occurred at about 2 a.m. on Saturday, when the insurgents launched a simultaneous assault from two directions on the Forward Operating Base, FOB, Mandaragirau.
The military said troops detected the attackers through their surveillance and early-warning systems and swiftly deployed combat teams to intercept them.
According to the Joint Task Force, the soldiers engaged the terrorists in heavy gunfire on both fronts, forcing the insurgents to withdraw in disarray.
The troops subsequently launched a hot pursuit and exploited the terrorists’ withdrawal routes, reportedly neutralising several of them.
Recovered items included AK-47 rifles with loaded magazines, a rocket-propelled grenade launcher with bombs and chargers, a video camera and other combat equipment.
The military said surveillance footage also showed the fleeing terrorists dragging the bodies of some of their colleagues towards the Timbuktu Triangle.
It added that no military personnel was killed or wounded in the attack.
The Theatre Command commended the troops of 162 Amphibious Battalion for their courage and professionalism, assuring that Operation HADIN KAI would continue offensive operations to deny terrorists freedom of action and restore lasting peace across the North-East.
