Christa Pike remains in critical condition after Tennessee authorities halted an attempt to execute her following complications during the procedure.

Pike’s lawyers said the 50-year-old remained under medical care nearly 24 hours after the execution attempt was stopped, with her prognosis still unclear.

According to her legal team, prison officials encountered difficulties administering the state’s execution protocol, prompting concerns about whether the drugs were being delivered as intended.

Lawyer Randall Spivey, who witnessed the procedure, said it became apparent that the execution was not proceeding as expected and that Pike remained responsive after officials had attempted to administer the required medication.

Medical specialists commenting on the reported circumstances said complications with intravenous access could prevent medication from entering the bloodstream as intended.

Pike’s lawyers said she had previously experienced difficulties during routine procedures involving intravenous access and had raised concerns about complications before the scheduled execution.

Tennessee Governor Bill Lee subsequently stayed the execution and ordered an independent investigation into what happened.

“This is a tragedy. There is no one who wanted what happened last night to happen. It shouldn’t have happened,” Lee said.

Pike’s legal team also questioned the emergency procedures available to lawyers during executions, saying an emergency telephone number provided for contacting the Tennessee Supreme Court went to voicemail when they attempted to seek intervention.

The incident follows another halted execution in Tennessee earlier in 2026, when Tony Carruthers received a one-year reprieve after officials encountered difficulties establishing the required intravenous access.

Pike was convicted and sentenced to death over the 1995 killing of Colleen Slemmer in Knoxville.

Her execution had been expected to make her the first woman executed by Tennessee in more than two centuries.

Authorities are now expected to examine the circumstances surrounding the failed procedure, including the execution protocol, medical preparations and emergency response arrangements before determining further action.
