The Federal Government of Nigeria has commenced a comprehensive review of the salary structure, allowances and welfare package for personnel of the Nigeria Police Force as part of efforts to improve their working conditions and operational effectiveness.
The decision was reached at the meeting of the Ministerial/Stakeholders Committee on the Review of the Nigeria Police Force Salary Structure, Welfare Package and Settlement of Outstanding Benefits held in Abuja.
Chairman of the Committee and Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Police Affairs, Dr Anuma Ogbonnaya Nlia, said the exercise underscores the Federal Government’s commitment to addressing longstanding welfare concerns affecting serving and retired police personnel.
He said the committee is reviewing both regular and special allowances to ensure they reflect current economic realities, the demands of policing and the provisions of the Public Service Rules.
The committee also examined outstanding pension arrears, death benefits, Group Life Insurance liabilities, Group Personal Accident claims and other welfare obligations requiring government intervention.
Members identified inadequate accommodation as a major challenge confronting police personnel and called for improved housing support to enhance officers’ welfare, morale and productivity.
The committee further resolved to harmonise existing allowances, eliminate duplication and recommend only allowances recognised under the Public Service Rules, alongside justified police-specific operational allowances.
A technical team has been directed to harmonise the proposed allowances with existing regulations and prepare a revised schedule, while the committee’s secretariat is to produce a comprehensive report for submission to the Federal Government.
Dr. Nlia expressed confidence that the outcome of the review would strengthen the Nigeria Police Force, improve officers’ welfare and enhance internal security across the country.
