Aba Power has assured residents and businesses in the Aba Ring-fenced Area that electricity supply will be restored before the end of the week as repairs to the gas infrastructure supplying its power plant near completion.
The assurance followed a visit by the Abia State House of Assembly Committee on Power and Public Utilities to the company to investigate the prolonged blackout affecting parts of the state.
The Chairman of Aba Power and former Minister of Power, Bart Nnaji, said electricity generation would resume once a critical component of the gas pressure system is installed.
Nnaji disclosed that the required Clutch Gear and Starter Motor had arrived in Nigeria after being sourced from the United States by Heirs Energies, the gas supplier to the 188-megawatt Geometric Power Plant in Osisioma, Aba.
The outage began last Thursday after the component reportedly failed at Heirs Energies’ Associated Gas Gathering Plant in Obigbo, Rivers State. The company attributed the failure to the age of the equipment.
The Aba Ring-fenced Area, covering nine of Abia State’s 17 local government areas, had enjoyed relatively stable electricity since the commissioning of the Geometric Power project about two years ago.
Chairman of the House committee, Aaron Uzodike, said the lawmakers were concerned about the blackout, particularly because residents had become accustomed to improved power supply in the area.
He said the committee was monitoring developments to ensure electricity was restored as soon as possible.
