The Akwa Ibom State Commissioner for Information, Aniekan Umanah, has called on journalists to uphold editorial independence, embrace ethical leadership and strengthen collaboration with government in the interest of democratic governance and sustainable development.
Umanah made the call while delivering the keynote address at the Leadership Summit organised for the State Working Committee and Chapel Officers of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Akwa Ibom State Council as part of activities to mark one year in office of Comrade Nsibiet John-led administration
Speaking on the theme, “Journalism and Leadership: Balancing Editorial Independence with Government Policies,” the commissioner said effective leadership remains the foundation of every successful professional institution and urged the newly elected NUJ leadership to provide purposeful and visionary direction for the union.
He commended the cordial relationship between the Akwa Ibom State Government and the NUJ, describing it as a partnership built on mutual respect, responsible journalism and constructive engagement. According to him, the administration of Governor Umo Eno has continued to recognise the media as a critical development partner through initiatives aimed at improving journalists’ welfare and strengthening the profession.
Umanah stressed that government and the media perform complementary roles in a democratic society, noting that while government formulates and implements public policies, the media is responsible for informing citizens, promoting accountability and encouraging informed public discourse.
He maintained that editorial independence should not be viewed as hostility towards government, just as collaboration with government should not be mistaken for a compromise of professional standards.
The commissioner also urged journalists to adapt to the rapidly evolving media landscape driven by digital technology and Artificial Intelligence, while insisting that technology should complement—not replace—professional judgment, ethical responsibility and human oversight in journalism.
To strengthen the journalism profession in the state, Umanah recommended the establishment of a Leadership and Media Excellence Academy to provide continuous training in leadership, investigative journalism, digital storytelling, fact-checking, Artificial Intelligence and media ethics.
He also advocated the development of a comprehensive welfare framework for journalists, including access to cooperative schemes, healthcare, housing, insurance and retirement support, arguing that professional excellence is difficult to achieve without adequate welfare.
In addition, the commissioner proposed the creation of an independent Media Ombudsman to handle public complaints against media organisations and reinforce accountability, transparency and public confidence in journalism.
He challenged the new NUJ leadership to build on the achievements of previous administrations by strengthening press freedom, promoting professionalism, embracing innovation and preparing the next generation of media leaders.
Umanah congratulated the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Akwa Ibom State Council, for organising the summit, expressing confidence that the programme would contribute to stronger leadership, ethical journalism and the continued advancement of the media profession in the state.
