The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, has reaffirmed the Nigerian Army’s commitment to strengthening partnerships with the private sector to improve personnel welfare, enhance institutional capacity and support operational effectiveness.

The army chief made the remarks on Thursday while receiving a delegation from Guaranty Trust Bank (GTBank), led by its Executive Director, Ahmed Liman, during a courtesy visit to the Army Headquarters in Abuja.

Shaibu described GTBank as a dependable partner whose financial services have contributed to the Nigerian Army’s transformation efforts through improved financial inclusion, administrative efficiency and enhanced welfare for personnel.

He noted that the Federal Government’s approval for increased military recruitment and the ongoing expansion of the Nigerian Army require a technology-driven banking system capable of delivering efficient financial services to personnel deployed across the country.

The COAS commended the bank’s leadership in digital banking and expressed optimism that closer collaboration would further improve financial service delivery and support the Army’s operational readiness.

In line with the Army’s “Soldier First” welfare initiative, Shaibu called on GTBank to broaden its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programmes to include support for wounded soldiers, widows and orphans of fallen military personnel.

He also appealed to the bank to install Automated Teller Machines (ATMs) in newly established and remote military barracks to improve access to banking services, reduce unnecessary troop movement and enhance operational efficiency.

Earlier, GTBank Executive Director Ahmed Liman praised the Nigerian Army for its commitment to protecting the country’s territorial integrity and ensuring the safety of citizens.

He reaffirmed the bank’s readiness to deepen its partnership with the Army by providing specialised financial services tailored to its operational and administrative needs while maintaining compliance with the Treasury Single Account (TSA) policy.

Liman highlighted several banking solutions available to government institutions, including dedicated trade services for processing Letters of Credit to support defence procurement, secure digital platforms for salary administration and contractor payments, as well as institutional fund management services.

He also outlined the bank’s military-focused products, including the GT Patriot Account, which offers reduced banking charges and concessionary loan rates for military personnel, alongside pension management services designed to strengthen the long-term financial security of serving and retired members of the Nigerian Army.
