A former Director of Defence Information, Major General John Enenche (retd.), has called on the Federal Government to review the welfare of Nigerian soldiers by raising the minimum monthly salary for rank-and-file personnel to ₦250,000.
Speaking in an interview on Sunday, the retired military officer said the proposed salary reflects the current cost of living and the sacrifices associated with military service.
Enenche argued that soldiers remain on duty at all times, have limited opportunities to earn additional income, and deserve improved remuneration in recognition of their commitment to national security.
He maintained that the proposed salary is modest, considering rising transportation, feeding and other living expenses, and recommended that any salary adjustment should extend across all military ranks in line with the existing remuneration structure.
The recommendation comes weeks after the Minister of Defence announced an increase in the minimum monthly salary of Nigerian soldiers from ₦49,000 to ₦100,000, while noting that the nation’s military remains underfunded.
