TINUBU REAFFIRMS COMMITMENT TO MODERNISING NIGERIAN ARMY

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s defence capabilities through increased support for the Nigerian Army, with a focus on improving operational effectiveness, defence diplomacy and indigenous military production.

The President gave the assurance at the grand finale of the 163rd Nigerian Army Day Celebration (NADCEL) 2026 held in Port Harcourt. He was represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima.

Speaking on behalf of the President, Vice President Shettima commended the Nigerian Army for its dedication and sacrifices in safeguarding the nation, stressing that the Federal Government remains committed to equipping the military to effectively address evolving security threats.

He said the Tinubu administration would continue to support initiatives aimed at modernising the Army through improved operational capacity, enhanced defence diplomacy and the promotion of local military production.

According to him, the administration shares the objectives of strengthening Nigeria’s leadership in defence cooperation across Africa while improving the operational readiness of the Armed Forces.

The Vice President also disclosed that the government is committed to strengthening the Defence Industries Corporation of Nigeria (DICON) to increase local production of advanced military equipment.

He noted that the initiative is expected to reduce dependence on foreign military hardware, create employment opportunities and promote local content development within Nigeria’s defence sector.

In his welcome address, the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, emphasised that the defence and security of Africa remain a collective responsibility requiring stronger collaboration among African armed forces.

He reaffirmed the Nigerian Army’s commitment to supporting regional and continental security initiatives through enhanced military cooperation and partnerships aimed at tackling common security challenges across the continent.

The grand finale of the 163rd Nigerian Army Day Celebration attracted several distinguished guests, including former President Olusegun Obasanjo, former Head of State General Yakubu Gowon, former Service Chiefs, 16 African Chiefs of Army Staff, the General Officer Commanding (GOC), 6 Division Nigerian Army, and other military and government officials.
