Colombia booked their place in the Round of 16 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after edging Ghana 1-0 in a hard-fought encounter at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City on Friday night.
An early goal from Jhon Arias proved decisive as Los Cafeteros maintained control for much of the contest to eliminate the Black Stars and continue their impressive World Cup campaign.
The South Americans suffered an early setback when forward Jhon Córdoba was forced off with an apparent groin injury just minutes into the match. However, his replacement, Luis Suárez of Sporting CP, made an immediate impact.

In the 14th minute, Suárez latched onto a pass from Daniel Muñoz before delivering a precise cross into the penalty area, where Arias calmly redirected the ball beyond Ghana goalkeeper Lawrence Ati Zigi to hand Colombia the lead.
Colombia continued to dominate possession and created several chances to extend their advantage. Luis Díaz thought he had doubled the lead midway through the second half, but his effort was ruled out for offside.
Díaz was denied again moments later by an outstanding save from Ati Zigi, who produced a series of impressive stops to keep Ghana in contention. The Ghanaian goalkeeper finished the match with seven saves despite his side’s defeat.
Played under sweltering conditions, with temperatures approaching 31 degrees Celsius and a high heat index, the match featured scheduled hydration breaks as players from both teams battled fatigue and dehydration.
Colombia entered the knockout fixture in excellent form after progressing through the group stage with victories over Uzbekistan and Congo, alongside a draw against Portugal. Their performances have established them as one of the tournament’s dark horses.
Ghana, who returned to the World Cup after missing the last Africa Cup of Nations, struggled to impose themselves against the disciplined Colombian side.

Although the Black Stars managed eight attempts on goal, none tested Colombia’s goalkeeper as the South American defence comfortably neutralised their attacking threats.
With the victory, Colombia advance to the Round of 16, where they will face Switzerland on Tuesday in Vancouver for a place in the quarter-finals.
The result extends Colombia’s unbeaten run in the tournament and keeps alive their hopes of mounting a serious challenge for a first FIFA World Cup title.
