A Federal High Court in Abuja has granted activist and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore fresh bail of 200 million naira, weeks after his earlier bail was revoked over his failure to appear for trial.

Justice Muhammad Umar ordered Sowore to provide two sureties one a traditional ruler from his community, the other a property owner within the Federal Capital Territory. The judge also directed him to deposit his international passport with the court registrar.

Sowore was handed over to his lawyers, and the case has been adjourned to Monday, July 6th, when he’s expected to open his defence.

He’s being prosecuted by the Department of State Services on cybercrime allegations, after social media posts in which he allegedly referred to President Tinubu as, quote, “a criminal.” He has pleaded not guilty.

His bail was first revoked on June 16th after he missed a court appearance, which he later said was due to a prior engagement in Lagos. The court rejected his request for an adjournment, and after his bid to have the trial judge step aside was dismissed, he was remanded at the Kuje Correctional Centre.

Speaking after Tuesday’s ruling, Sowore said the bail conditions were part of continued efforts against him, but insisted they would not stop what he called his movement.

He said, quote, “There is no bus on earth that can stop this revolution… it is not about my freedom; it is about the liberation of the Nigerian people.”
