The Akwa Ibom State Government has announced plans to officially unveil the 350-bed Ibom International Hospital and the Ibom Medical City Project, a landmark healthcare initiative aimed at transforming medical service delivery and positioning the state as a leading healthcare and medical tourism destination in Africa.

According to a statement issued on June 20, 2026, by the Commissioner for Information, Aniekan Umanah, the project represents a major milestone in the administration of Governor Umo Eno and reflects the government’s commitment to strengthening healthcare infrastructure and expanding access to quality medical services.

The official unveiling is scheduled to take place on Tuesday, June 23, 2026, at the Ibom Medical City located along the Uyo–Ikot Ekpene Road.

The event will be performed by the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Muhammad Ali Pate, who is expected to serve as the Special Guest of Honour. Also expected at the ceremony is Abdu Mukhtar.

The government explained that the Ibom Medical City Project is being implemented through a collaborative effort involving the Akwa Ibom State Ministries of Health, Special Duties, and Housing. The initiative is designed as an integrated healthcare ecosystem that combines clinical services, medical education, research, innovation, accommodation, and wellness facilities within a single development framework.

The project is being supervised by Tokiye Integrated Medical Services, a healthcare project development and management company with operations in both Nigeria and the United Kingdom.

He disclosed that the project emerged following recommendations and endorsements by healthcare stakeholders during the Akwa Ibom State Ministry of Health ARISE Health Sector Town Hall Meeting held in July 2025.

At the heart of the development is a 10-storey, 350-bed international hospital equipped to provide advanced medical services through 24 specialist departments. The facility is expected to significantly enhance healthcare delivery within the state and reduce the need for medical tourism abroad.

Beyond the hospital itself, the Medical City project will include a 100-unit residential accommodation for healthcare personnel, medical research and training centres, pharmaceutical and laboratory hubs, as well as digital health and wellness infrastructure designed to support modern healthcare delivery and innovation.

He noted that the project is strategically positioned to attract healthcare professionals, researchers, investors, and patients from across Nigeria and other African countries, thereby contributing to economic growth while improving healthcare outcomes.

According to the release, the Akwa Ibom State Government has invited healthcare stakeholders, development partners, investors, members of the public, and the media to witness the unveiling ceremony, describing it as a historic milestone in the state’s journey toward becoming a regional hub for healthcare excellence.

The government reiterated that the Ibom Medical City Project aligns with the broader ARISE Agenda of Governor Umo Eno’s administration, which prioritises investments in critical sectors such as healthcare, education, infrastructure, and human capital development to improve the quality of life for citizens.

When completed and fully operational, the Ibom International Hospital and Medical City are expected to strengthen specialist healthcare services, create employment opportunities, promote medical research, and establish Akwa Ibom as a major centre for healthcare innovation and medical tourism in Africa.
