The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arraigned a husband and wife before the Federal High Court in Ado-Ekiti over an alleged ₦1.09 billion contract fraud.

The defendants, Olorunbukunmi Taiwo, a self-styled native doctor, and his wife, Awolegan Omolola Omotola, were brought before Justice Abubakar Usman on a six-count charge bordering on obtaining money by false pretence and retention of proceeds of crime.

The Ilorin Zonal Directorate of the EFCC alleged that the couple defrauded a widow and school proprietor, Anazia Colina Kenechukwu, by claiming that Taiwo had secured a road construction contract from the Delta State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission (DESOPADEC).

Investigations revealed that large sums were paid into the first defendant’s account and later traced to the acquisition of two properties in Ado-Ekiti, which have since been placed under interim forfeiture by the court.

The defendants pleaded not guilty, while the case was adjourned for further hearing.
