The Governor of Benue State, Hyacinth Alia has signed the State Electricity Bill into law, describing the legislation as a significant milestone in efforts to improve electricity supply, attract investment, and accelerate economic development across the state.

According to a statement issued by the Governor’s Technical Adviser on Media, Publicity and Strategic Communication, Solomon Iorpev, the new law is designed to open up the electricity sector to greater private-sector participation, encourage competition, strengthen consumer protection, and expand access to power in underserved communities.

While assenting to the bill, Alia described the legislation as a landmark step toward boosting economic growth, improving energy infrastructure, and creating sustainable development opportunities throughout Benue State.

The governor noted that the law is expected to stimulate business activities, support industrialisation, create jobs, and improve service delivery in both urban and rural areas. It is also aimed at enhancing collaboration between electricity providers and consumers while increasing investor confidence in the state’s power sector.

Alia commended the Benue State House of Assembly for passing the bill and reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to creating an enabling environment for investment and development.

He observed that the legislation should have been enacted earlier but stressed that his government remains focused on removing bureaucratic obstacles and advancing the state’s development agenda.

The law follows the Assembly’s earlier passage of a package of infrastructure and regulatory reforms, including provisions for establishing the Benue State Electricity/Power Management Agency to oversee electricity management and power distribution within the state.
