Residents of Kwanka community in Lafia Local Government Area have appealed to federal and state authorities to take immediate steps to prevent a recurrence of the devastating floods that have repeatedly affected the area.
The appeal was made by the village head of the community, Dogara Muhammad, who warned that the community remains highly vulnerable as forecasts predict increased rainfall and possible flooding across parts of Nigeria.
According to the traditional ruler, Kwanka has endured years of destructive flooding that have resulted in loss of lives, destruction of homes and the displacement of residents.
He recalled that a major flood incident three years ago claimed the lives of three community members after days of heavy rainfall inundated the area. The disaster also destroyed several houses, leaving many families homeless and forcing others to relocate temporarily.
Muhammad said recent forecasts issued by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency have heightened fears among residents, prompting renewed calls for preventive action before the peak of the rainy season.
He noted that recurring floods have created deep erosion channels and gullies throughout the community, worsening environmental degradation and exposing homes, farmlands, roads and other infrastructure to greater risk.
The village head urged government agencies, emergency management authorities and environmental experts to conduct urgent assessments and implement mitigation measures aimed at reducing the impact of future flooding.
He identified drainage construction, erosion control projects and improved flood management infrastructure as critical interventions needed to safeguard lives and property in the area.
Residents have also expressed concern about the approaching months of intense rainfall, warning that delayed action could expose the community to another humanitarian crisis.
