President Donald Trump has suggested replacing planned musical performances at the upcoming Great American State Fair with a political rally after several artists withdrew from the event, citing concerns over its political character.
The event, scheduled to run from June 24 to July 10 on Washington’s National Mall, is part of activities marking the United States’ 250th anniversary celebrations.
Trump made the remarks on Saturday through a post on Truth Social, criticising the musicians who pulled out and proposing that the planned performances be scrapped in favour of a large-scale “Make America Great Again” rally.
“We should have a giant MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN RALLY, for 250, instead of having overpriced singers…” Trump wrote.
The former president is also expected to headline elements of the celebrations and is scheduled to deliver remarks at the fair’s opening ceremony on June 24, according to organisers.
The withdrawals followed the announcement of a lineup that included Morris Day and the Time, Young MC, Martina McBride, the Commodores, and Bret Michaels. Each later stated that they had decided not to participate after learning that the event carried political implications they had not anticipated.
Organisers under the Trump-backed Freedom 250 initiative maintained that the fair was designed as a nonpartisan celebration of America’s semiquincentennial and aimed at bringing Americans together.
A spokesperson for the group described the event as focused on showcasing American traditions, innovation, exhibits, entertainment, military displays, and public celebrations.
However, the withdrawals have reignited debate over the intersection of politics and public commemorations surrounding the nation’s 250th anniversary events.
Freedom 250 officials have yet to announce replacement performers for the scheduled concert series.
