United States Army Secretary Daniel Driscoll has submitted his resignation following months of reported tensions with Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, according to U.S. media reports.
The White House did not deny reports by The Wall Street Journal that Driscoll had stepped down, while the U.S. Army declined to comment on the matter. Reuters reported that it remained unclear whether President Donald Trump’s administration had accepted the resignation.
White House spokeswoman Anna Kelly praised Driscoll’s tenure, saying he helped advance the president’s military agenda, strengthen Army readiness and support negotiations between Russia and Ukraine.
Driscoll, a former law school classmate of Vice President JD Vance, became Army secretary in February 2025 and focused on modernising the service, including efforts to speed up weapons procurement and reduce reliance on expensive military systems.
A Reuters source said Driscoll had raised concerns with the Trump administration over Army transformation and readiness, as well as Hegseth’s decisions to remove senior military leaders.
The resignation follows a series of high-level departures at the Pentagon. Hegseth previously removed Army Chief of Staff Randy George and oversaw the departures of other senior military officials, including Navy Secretary John Phelan.
Driscoll gained wider attention after President Trump appointed him to participate in diplomatic discussions with Russia and Ukraine aimed at ending the war, a role considered unusual for an Army secretary.
Before joining the Pentagon, Driscoll served in the Iraq War, ran unsuccessfully for Congress in 2020 and later worked as an adviser to Trump’s 2024 presidential campaign.
