The Minister of Defence, Christopher Musa, has warned that any attempt to stage a coup in Nigeria would be futile, insisting that democracy remains the best form of governance for the country.
He stated this on Friday during an interview on Arise News, while reacting to the ongoing court martial of officers accused of involvement in an alleged October 2025 coup plot.
According to him, those allegedly involved in the plot lacked real support and would not have succeeded even if they attempted to act.
“Anybody planning any coup is wasting his time,” he said. “Democracy is far, far better than any military regime.”

The minister described the accused officers as “confused individuals” who misled junior personnel into actions that led to their current legal troubles.
He added that such actions could have triggered resistance even from civilians, stressing that the idea was fundamentally unrealistic.
“Even the civilians in Nigeria would have taken them down,” he said.
Musa expressed concern over the involvement of junior officers, noting that military leadership regretted when personnel became entangled in such situations.
He said due process was being followed in the ongoing court-martial and assured that the accused were being given a fair opportunity to defend themselves.

The Defence Minister also defended the current administration, arguing that the armed forces had been adequately supported, including improvements in welfare, salaries, and allowances.
He maintained that there was no justification for any coup attempt, insisting that security personnel were well catered for under President Bola Tinubu’s government.
