The National Democratic Coalition (NDC) has commenced moves to adopt consensus candidates for all elective positions ahead of forthcoming elections, as part of efforts to strengthen party unity and avoid divisive primaries.

The party disclosed that the proposed consensus arrangement will cover presidential, governorship, senatorial, House of Representatives, and State House of Assembly positions across the country.

To drive the process, the NDC has inaugurated a Selection Committee tasked with consulting widely among stakeholders and making final recommendations on single candidacies for various offices.

According to the party, the committee’s recommendations will be forwarded to aspirants for adoption. However, in situations where consensus fails to emerge, the party said primary elections would be conducted for the affected positions.

Party sources said the move is aimed at reducing internal friction, cutting the high financial cost associated with party primaries, and consolidating the structure of the relatively young political platform.

Speaking on the development, supporters of the arrangement argued that the NDC, which is barely five months old, needs to focus on building cohesion rather than engaging in potentially divisive contests capable of weakening the party ahead of major elections.

The consensus model has continued to generate debate within political circles, with analysts noting that while it may foster unity and save costs, it also raises concerns about internal democracy and equal opportunities for aspirants within political parties.
