Former Anambra State Governor and Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) chieftain, Peter Obi, has reacted to reports linking former President Goodluck Jonathan to the 2027 presidential race, stating that his focus remains on building a better Nigeria rather than monitoring potential rivals.
Obi made the remarks while speaking with journalists shortly after his screening exercise in Abuja.
Responding to questions surrounding Jonathan’s reported entry into the presidential contest, Obi said democracy provides every citizen the opportunity to seek public office and offer themselves for service.

According to him, his attention is not on who joins the race but on presenting solutions aimed at addressing Nigeria’s challenges.
“Democracy is about people offering themselves for service and being voted for. I’m not in any way going around looking at who is contesting. I’m concentrating on how to build a better Nigeria,” Obi said.
The former presidential candidate further outlined his priorities ahead of the 2027 election, emphasising national unity, security and economic prosperity.
He said his vision is anchored on inclusive governance and the constitutional principle of federal character, stressing the need to create equal opportunities for all citizens regardless of background.
Obi also reiterated his long-standing position on social mobility and equal opportunities, stating that Nigeria should become a country where individuals can succeed through merit rather than connections.
He said, “My priority ahead of the 2027 presidential election is to build a united, secure and prosperous Nigeria through inclusive governance.”
Addressing the issue of insecurity, Obi stressed the need for improved safety across the country, noting that citizens should be able to move freely without fear while families should not live under the threat of violence and killings.

Speculation around the 2027 presidential race has continued to gain momentum as political alignments and discussions intensify ahead of the next general election. However, there has been no official confirmation regarding Jonathan’s participation in the contest.
