Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Rashee Rice has been ordered to serve a 30-day jail sentence after testing positive for marijuana, a violation of the terms of his probation linked to a high-profile crash case in Texas.
The Texas State Attorney’s Office confirmed that the jail term forms part of Rice’s original sentence handed down in July last year after he pleaded guilty to third-degree felony charges involving a serious bodily injury collision and racing on a highway resulting in bodily injury.
Rice, 26, had previously received five years of deferred probation under a plea agreement, with the 30-day incarceration included as a condition of that probation arrangement.

The latest development comes during the National Football League’s offseason workout period and could affect Rice’s participation in organised team activities and minicamp preparations ahead of the new season.
The Kansas City Chiefs declined to comment on the matter. Rice’s legal representative had not publicly responded to inquiries at the time of reporting.
The NFL also refrained from making further remarks on the issue, with league spokesperson Brian McCarthy saying officials were aware of the report but would not provide additional comments.
Rice’s legal troubles stem from a March 30, 2024 crash on Dallas’ North Central Expressway. Prosecutors alleged that he was driving a Lamborghini Urus SUV at approximately 119 miles per hour (191 km/h), making aggressive moves through traffic before colliding with other vehicles.
Authorities said several people were injured in the crash and alleged that Rice left the scene without checking on those involved, fleeing on foot after the incident.
Ahead of last season, Rice had publicly addressed the controversy, stating during training camp that he had grown from the experience and changed his approach to life.

“You have to learn from things like that,” he said at the time. “I’ve learned and taken advantage of being able to learn from something like that.”
Rice had already served a six-game suspension under the NFL’s personal conduct policy and has also missed time due to injury during his career.
Despite those setbacks, he played a significant role in Kansas City’s Super Bowl-winning campaign during the 2023 season and remains one of the Chiefs’ key offensive players.
