The Speaker of the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. (Elder) Udeme Otong, has suspended his Press Secretary, Mr Emmanuel Ebong, over the issuance of what was described as an unauthorised and misleading official publication.
In a statement issued on June 3, 2026, by the Speaker’s Chief of Staff, Mr Emmanuel Idio, the Assembly leadership said the publication titled “AKHA to Resume Plenary at Udo Udoma Complex Next Week,” released on June 2, 2026, was issued without the knowledge or approval of the Speaker.

According to the statement, the publication was released by the Press Unit of the Speaker’s Office solely on the directive of Mr Ebong, an action the Assembly described as a serious breach of official protocol, insubordination and abuse of office.
As a result, Mr Ebong has been suspended from his duties as Press Secretary to the Speaker with immediate effect and until further notice.
The Assembly also advised members of the public, stakeholders and media organisations to disregard any communication issued by Mr Ebong on behalf of the Office of the Speaker, the Press Unit or the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly during the period of his suspension.
“The publication was issued without the knowledge or authorisation of the Speaker. The action by Mr Emmanuel Ebong is a serious breach of official protocol and constitutes insubordination and an abuse of office,” the statement said.

The Office of the Speaker reaffirmed its commitment to professionalism and strict adherence to established procedures in the conduct of official business.
