Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has called on professional associations in Nigeria, particularly in the legal sector, to focus on supporting institutional development rather than engaging in excessive public criticism.

Wike made the remarks while receiving members of the Body of Benchers led by its newly appointed Chairman, Chief Albert Akpomudje, during a courtesy visit to his residence in Life Camp, Abuja.

The minister’s comments followed recent criticisms reportedly linked to the leadership of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) concerning the construction of houses for judges.

Wike defended the initiative, insisting that improving the welfare and working conditions of judicial officers should not be interpreted as an attempt to compromise the independence of the judiciary.

According to him, constructive criticism remains important in governance, but indiscriminate criticism of every government initiative does not contribute positively to national development.

He maintained that providing infrastructure for judges was aimed at strengthening the judiciary and enhancing service delivery within the justice sector.

The FCT minister also questioned what he described as double standards within the legal profession, noting that governments at various levels had often supported the Nigerian Bar Association without such support being viewed as interference.

Wike urged legal practitioners and professional bodies to use their positions to contribute meaningfully to reforms and development within the justice system.

He stressed that public office holders should be remembered for their contributions and positive impact on society.

During the meeting, the minister directed officials of the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA) to facilitate the construction of an access road to the Body of Benchers’ annex building currently under construction.

He also assured the delegation of continued support from the FCT Administration.

In his remarks, the Chairman of the Body of Benchers, Chief Albert Akpomudje, commended Wike for ongoing infrastructural development across Abuja and appreciated his support for the judiciary.
