Plateau State Governor, Caleb Mutfwang, has cautioned residents and social media users against spreading reports of banditry and terrorist attacks online without verification, saying such actions could damage the image of the state.
The governor gave the warning during a public event captured in a viral video circulating on social media.
According to Mutfwang, the Plateau State Government keeps accurate records of security incidents and does not conceal casualties arising from attacks on communities.
He, however, expressed concern that the rapid circulation of unverified information and rumours online was creating unnecessary fear among residents and portraying the state negatively before the international community.

The governor alleged that there were deliberate attempts by some individuals to “demarket” Plateau State by consistently projecting it as unsafe despite its long-standing reputation as a peaceful tourism destination.
He warned that misinformation and exaggerated reports could undermine security efforts and discourage investment and tourism in the state.
Mutfwang urged residents and social media users to verify information before sharing it online and to support efforts aimed at restoring peace and stability across Plateau State.
