The Rivers State Government has distributed science equipment and instructional materials to all senior secondary schools across the state ahead of the forthcoming West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), in a move aimed at strengthening practical learning and improving performance in science subjects.

The distribution exercise was flagged off on Monday at the premises of the Rivers State Senior Secondary Schools Board by the Commissioner for Education, Peters Nwagor, who described the initiative as part of the government’s ongoing commitment to improving the quality of education in the state.

Nwagor explained that the materials were approved and provided by the Rivers State Government under the administration of Governor Siminalayi Fubara, to enhance science teaching, practical experiments, and classroom learning across public schools.

He stressed that science education remains central to technological growth and national development, adding that sustained investment in the sector is essential for global competitiveness.

The commissioner also directed principals to ensure proper use of the materials strictly for academic purposes, warning that any diversion, hoarding, or sale of the equipment would attract disciplinary measures in line with civil service regulations.

In a firm caution, Nwagor warned school administrators against examination malpractice, stating that any principal found aiding or encouraging such practices would face strict sanctions.

“Examination malpractice undermines the integrity of our education system, and we will not tolerate it,” he said.

Also speaking, the Chairman of the Rivers State Senior Secondary Schools Board, Tony Egwurugwu, urged school heads to ensure judicious use of the materials to benefit students and improve academic outcomes. He also commended the state government for its continued support of the education sector.

In his remarks, Board Member for Technical Education, Nwisabari Bani Samuel, expressed appreciation to Governor Fubara for prioritising education and investing in tools that enhance practical learning in schools.

He said that the initiative comes as schools prepare students for external examinations, including those conducted by the West African Examinations Council.
