Lagos State University has celebrated its continued rise in national and continental ranking as it emerged once again as the most preferred university by admission seekers in Nigeria.

The institution recorded 84,326 first-choice applications in the 2026 admission statistics released by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board during its ongoing Policy Meeting on Admissions held in Abuja.

The figure places Lagos State University ahead of other leading institutions, including the University of Lagos with 78,240 applications and Obafemi Awolowo University with 60,370 applications.

In a statement released on its official platforms, LASU said the development marks the second consecutive year it has retained its position as Nigeria’s “University of First Choice,” describing the achievement as evidence of growing public confidence in the institution.

The university attributed its rising popularity to improvements in academic quality, infrastructure development, digital innovation, and student-centred governance.

According to the statement, LASU has steadily climbed admission rankings over recent years, moving from outside the top 10 in earlier cycles to third place in 2023, second in 2024, and first position in 2025 and 2026 respectively.

The institution noted that the 2026 figure of over 84,000 applications further consolidates its reputation as one of the fastest-growing universities in Africa.

Vice-Chancellor, Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, expressed appreciation to the Lagos State Government for its support, describing it as critical to the university’s progress and stability.

She also commended staff and students for their commitment to strengthening the institution’s academic and administrative excellence.

Olatunji-Bello described the development as a validation of LASU’s strategic vision to become a globally competitive institution anchored on excellence, innovation, integrity, and impactful scholarship.

She reaffirmed the university’s commitment to sustaining high standards in teaching, research, and community service, while ensuring that students are equipped with skills relevant to a rapidly changing global environment.
