The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Prof. Joash Amupitan, has disclosed that more than 1.4 million ad hoc personnel will be deployed for the 2027 general elections across Nigeria.

Amupitan said the commission plans to engage mainly members of the National Youth Service Corps to support the conduct of the elections.

According to him, about 707,384 personnel will be required for the Presidential and National Assembly elections scheduled for January 16, 2027, while another 707,384 ad hoc staff will be deployed for the Governorship and State Assembly elections fixed for February 6, 2027.

He added that additional personnel would also be needed for off-cycle governorship polls and bye-elections.

The INEC chairman commended corps members for their professionalism, neutrality, patriotism, and technological competence during previous elections, particularly their handling of the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System during the 2023 polls.

In response, the Director-General of the NYSC, Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu, reaffirmed the scheme’s commitment to supporting credible elections in the country.

He, however, called for improved welfare packages, insurance coverage, and better compensation for corps members engaged in election duties.

The planned deployment forms part of preparations by the electoral commission ahead of the 2027 general elections.
