No fewer than 11 people have died in a tragic road accident after a vehicle plunged off the Eruku Bridge along the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway in Ogun State.

The Ogun State Sector Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps confirmed the incident in a statement issued by its spokesperson, Afolabi Odunsi, on Sunday.

According to the statement, the crash involved a gold Toyota vehicle with registration number GGE722KJ, which reportedly somersaulted before falling off the bridge.

“All 11 occupants of the vehicle, comprising 10 adult males and one adult female, lost their lives in the accident,” the statement noted.

Odunsi explained that operatives from the FRSC Itori Unit Command were immediately deployed to the scene, where rescue efforts were carried out with support from members of the local community.

He added that the victims were trapped inside the vehicle after the doors locked on impact, forcing rescuers to dismantle parts of the vehicle to recover the bodies.

The remains of the deceased have been deposited at the State Specialist Hospital morgue in Ifo.

Preliminary investigations by the FRSC identified overloading and driving under the influence as possible causes of the crash.

Reacting to the incident, Ogun State Sector Commander of the FRSC, Oludare Ogunjobi, urged motorists to exercise caution, especially during night travel, and extended condolences to the families of the victims.
