FIFA has announced that the 2026 FIFA World Cup will begin with three separate opening ceremonies across the tournament’s host nations Mexico, the United States, and Canada in what organisers describe as a celebration of football, music, and cultural diversity.

The ceremonies will precede the opening matches in each host country and are expected to feature a lineup of internationally recognised music stars and entertainers.

The first ceremony is scheduled for June 11 at Mexico City Stadium, formerly known as Azteca Stadium, ahead of the opening fixture between the Mexico national football team and the South Africa national football team.

Artistes confirmed for the Mexico event include J Balvin, Maná, Alejandro Fernández, Belinda, Lila Downs, Tyla, and Los Ángeles Azules.

FIFA President, Gianni Infantino said the ceremonies would reflect both the individuality of the host nations and the unity of the global tournament.

“The world will share this moment and that’s how this tournament will begin,” Infantino said, adding that the events would combine music, culture, and football on an unprecedented scale.

Canada’s opening match against the Bosnia and Herzegovina national football team will be held in Toronto on June 12. Performers expected at the Canadian ceremony include Alanis Morissette, Michael Bublé, Alessia Cara, Jessie Reyez, Nora Fatehi, and Elyanna.

Organisers said the Toronto ceremony would highlight Canada’s multicultural identity and diverse cultural heritage.

Later on June 12, the United States men’s national soccer team will face the Paraguay national football team in Los Angeles, where another major opening show is planned.

The American event will be headlined by Katy Perry, alongside performances from Future, Lisa, Anitta, and Tyla.

Infantino described the Los Angeles show as a reflection of the cultural diversity and entertainment influence of the United States, adding that music would serve as a unifying force throughout the competition.

FIFA also confirmed that additional performers, including Danny Ocean and Sanjoy, will participate in activities surrounding the tournament’s opening celebrations.

Organisers encouraged supporters to arrive early at venues, noting that fans themselves would play an interactive role in the ceremonies as the World Cup begins simultaneously across multiple time zones and countries.
