Nigeria’s Ambassador-Designate to South Africa, Femi Fani-Kayode, and Ambassador-Designate to Mexico, Reno Omokri, have thrown their weight behind the re-election bid of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in 2027, insisting that the presidency should remain in Southern Nigeria for two consecutive terms in the interest of national stability and fairness.

In a joint statement issued on Saturday, the two diplomats argued that Nigeria’s long-standing power-sharing arrangement between the North and South should be respected to preserve unity and political balance in the country.

According to them, Northern Nigeria had already completed its allotted tenure under the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari, who served two uninterrupted terms between 2015 and 2023.

The envoys said the current administration should be allowed to complete a corresponding eight-year tenure under the informal rotational understanding that has shaped Nigeria’s democratic politics since the return to civilian rule in 1999.

“We believe it is in the best interest of the stability, unity and prosperity of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, and in keeping with the gentleman’s agreement that ushered in the Fourth Republic, for there to be a balanced and orderly rotation of power between the North and the South,” the statement said.

They maintained that any attempt to return presidential power to the North after only one term in the South would undermine national cohesion and disrupt the existing political equilibrium.

The ambassadors-designate further declared President Tinubu as their preferred candidate for the 2027 presidential election, citing what they described as significant economic gains recorded under his administration.

They claimed that the president had overseen sustained economic growth, trade surpluses and increased Nigeria’s contribution to global GDP growth since assuming office.
