Chief Justice of the United States, John Roberts, has defended the integrity of the U.S. Supreme Court, rejecting growing public perceptions that the justices act as political figures rather than judicial officers interpreting the law.
Speaking at a legal conference in Hershey, Pennsylvania, Roberts said the court’s role is often misunderstood by the public, particularly in an increasingly polarised political climate.
He stressed that the Supreme Court is constitutionally mandated to decide cases based on legal interpretation, even when such decisions are unpopular.
“At a very basic level, people think we’re making policy decisions, as opposed to applying what the law provides,” Roberts said, noting that this misconception fuels the belief that justices operate as political actors.
Roberts, who leads the court’s 6–3 conservative majority, acknowledged that the judiciary often issues rulings that do not align with public opinion. However, he insisted that such decisions are rooted in constitutional interpretation rather than political preference.
He further emphasised that judicial independence requires the court to remain insulated from political pressure, even when handling contentious national issues.
In recent years, the Supreme Court has delivered landmark rulings affecting abortion rights, gun regulation, and voting laws, drawing strong reactions from both conservative and liberal groups. Critics have argued that the court has shifted American law significantly to the right, while supporters say it has restored constitutional balance.
Without referencing any specific cases, Roberts reiterated that disagreement with court decisions is legitimate, but warned against personal attacks on judges.
“We’re not simply part of the political process,” he said, adding that criticism should focus on legal reasoning rather than the individuals serving on the bench.
He also raised concerns about rising hostility toward members of the judiciary, noting that intensified personal attacks could have serious implications for judicial independence and security.
Roberts said that public understanding of the court’s role remains essential to maintaining trust in the justice system, especially as the institution continues to rule on sensitive national issues.
