The Federal Bureau of Investigation on Wednesday searched the Portsmouth office of Virginia Senate President Pro Tempore Louise Lucas, intensifying a long-running public corruption investigation tied to the influential Democratic lawmaker.
In a statement, the FBI confirmed that federal law enforcement activity took place at Lucas’ office address in Portsmouth, Virginia, but declined to provide additional details, citing an ongoing investigation.
“There is no threat to public safety,” the agency said. “This is an ongoing investigation, and no further information is publicly available at this time.”
According to a source familiar with the matter, the probe dates back to the Biden administration and centres on allegations of public corruption. Federal agents also executed a search warrant at The Cannabis Outlet, a nearby business co-owned by Lucas. The development was first reported by Fox News.
A federal law enforcement official said the Drug Enforcement Administration is participating in the investigation, though drugs are “not the primary focus” of the inquiry.
Lucas, one of Virginia’s most powerful Democratic lawmakers, has played a central role in the state’s recent redistricting efforts. She gained national attention for backing congressional map changes designed to strengthen Democratic representation and reduce Republican strongholds in Virginia’s 11 congressional districts.
The FBI action comes during heightened political tensions over congressional redistricting nationwide. Last month, Virginia voters approved a constitutional amendment enabling Democratic lawmakers to pursue a revised congressional map that could potentially help Democrats gain up to four seats in the upcoming midterm elections. The legality of the amendment is currently under review by the Virginia Supreme Court, which heard oral arguments last week.
Virginia’s redistricting push mirrors similar battles unfolding across the country after President Donald Trump encouraged Texas Republicans to redraw congressional maps. In response, several Democratic-led states launched their own redistricting campaigns ahead of the fall elections.
Virginia House Speaker Don Scott defended Lucas and cautioned against rushing to judgment, pointing to what he described as the increasing politicisation of federal law enforcement agencies.
“Given the politicisation of this administration — an FBI led by Kash Patel and a Justice Department run by President Donald Trump’s former personal attorney — I think people should take this with a grain of salt and allow the facts to come out before jumping to conclusions,” Scott said in a statement Wednesday.
Gov. Abigail Spanberger’s office acknowledged awareness of the federal operation but declined further comment.
The searches also come just days after former FBI Director James Comey, a longtime Trump critic, was indicted adding another layer of political scrutiny to an already charged national climate.
Lucas has not publicly commented on the investigation, and NBC News reported that requests for comment from her representatives had not yet been returned.
