Nigeria Democratic Congress Presidential candidate, Peter Obi has formally commenced his campaign for the 2027 presidential election, pledging to unite Nigeria, strengthen security and transform the country from a consumption-driven to a production-based economy.

Obi, in an address marking the commencement of the 2027 Presidential and National Assembly campaign period, said Nigeria could overcome its challenges if its resources were managed responsibly and its people given the opportunity to become productive.

He identified poverty, insecurity, unemployment, weak infrastructure, unreliable electricity and the high cost of doing business as major challenges confronting Nigerians, insisting that government must be judged by its impact on citizens’ lives.

The former Anambra State governor said his economic agenda would prioritise agriculture, manufacturing, technology, energy, infrastructure and human capital development, with emphasis on job creation, enterprise and value addition.

On security, Obi proposed improved intelligence gathering, stronger coordination among security agencies, better border management, technology-driven operations and decentralised security management with effective coordination between the different levels of government.

He also pledged increased investment in education, healthcare and technical and vocational training, describing Nigeria’s youthful population as a major economic opportunity rather than a burden.

Obi said every region of the country must become productive by leveraging its comparative advantages, while the Federal Capital Territory should serve as a model of efficient urban planning and public service delivery.

The presidential candidate further promised fiscal discipline, reduced wasteful spending and measurable outcomes for government investments, stressing that every naira must have a clear purpose.

He urged Nigerians to scrutinise the records, competence and policy proposals of all presidential candidates ahead of the 2027 election and reject campaigns driven by ethnicity, religion, propaganda, elitism and cronyism.

Obi also challenged presidential candidates to engage directly with Nigerians, particularly communities affected by insecurity, poverty and other national challenges.

He pledged that he and his running mate would personally travel across the country to listen to citizens, defend their records and present their plans for rebuilding Nigeria.

Obi said the 2027 election should be about “capacity, competence, compassion, character and commitment,” declaring that his campaign would focus on uniting Nigeria, securing the country and placing it on the path of inclusive economic growth.

He concluded with his campaign message: “A New Nigeria is possible.”
