The Akwa Ibom State Government has approved and released ₦5.9 billion for basic education reforms covering 2025 and 2026, as part of efforts to strengthen the sector.
Chairman of the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Anietie Etuk, disclosed this during a press briefing in Uyo, stating that the intervention will adopt a holistic approach to school development, including classrooms, water, sanitation, and electricity.

He said the reforms, approved by Governor Umo Eno, also include the introduction of a new primary school curriculum and the recruitment of 1,000 additional teachers to address manpower shortages, with emphasis on ICT and computer science specialists.
Etuk raised concerns over increasing vandalism of school facilities and urged host communities to safeguard government investments, warning that such acts could undermine ongoing improvements.
He also highlighted disputes over school lands between communities and authorities, noting their negative impact on school administration and enrollment.
Meanwhile, Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Nsibiet John, commended the state government for prioritising education, particularly the approval for teacher recruitment, describing it as a boost for learning outcomes, especially in rural areas.

The SUBEB Chairman reaffirmed the board’s commitment to sustaining reforms aimed at improving the quality of basic education across the state.
