The Nigerian Senate has renewed its call for the introduction of a Pay-As-You-Go billing model for DSTV services, raising concerns over the current subscription structure that charges customers for channels and services they may not use.

President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, made the remarks during the screening of ministerial nominee Joseph Tegbe on the Senate floor.

The development comes amid ongoing efforts by President Bola Tinubu to strengthen his cabinet. As earlier reported, the President had forwarded the names of new nominees to the Senate for confirmation. Among those nominated are Sola Enikanolaiye and Joseph Tegbe.

The request was conveyed in a formal letter addressed to the Senate and read during plenary by Akpabio.

During the screening session, the Senate President questioned why Nigerian subscribers are unable to benefit from a Pay-As-You-Go system, which he noted is operational in other countries, including South Africa. He emphasised that despite relatively high subscription fees, Nigerian consumers continue to pay for bundled services regardless of usage.

Akpabio subsequently directed the Senate Committee on Telecommunications to summon DSTV representatives for questioning. The committee is expected to investigate the matter and present its findings to the Senate in due course.
