The Governing Council of the University of Port Harcourt has reaffirmed its commitment to repositioning the institution for global relevance through digital transformation, innovation and strategic partnerships.

This was the central focus of a four-day council retreat held in Lagos, where the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of Council, Mao Ohuabunwa, emphasised the need for deliberate efforts to enhance the university’s international visibility.

Addressing participants on the theme of global positioning through digital innovation and entrepreneurship, Ohuabunwa highlighted digital transformation as critical to improving academic delivery, administrative efficiency and overall competitiveness in the global knowledge economy.

He called for sustained investment in digital infrastructure, as well as capacity building for staff and the development of partnerships with industry players and international institutions.

The Vice-Chancellor, Owunari Abraham Georgewill, also underscored the importance of digitalisation in modern university management, describing it as essential for long-term growth and institutional sustainability.

George will note that the university has already begun implementing measures to digitise academic and administrative processes, adding that continued innovation would strengthen teaching quality, research output and global engagement.

The retreat featured contributions from several academic leaders, including Joseph Ajienka, Barineme Fakae and Bourdillon Omijeh, alongside other stakeholders who stressed the urgency of embracing digital transformation as a pathway to academic excellence.

According to the institution’s spokesperson, Dr Sam Kpeku, discussions throughout the retreat focused on practical strategies to drive innovation, strengthen research and improve global competitiveness.

The council said outcomes from the retreat are expected to shape policy frameworks and actionable plans aimed at positioning the University of Port Harcourt for sustained growth and increased international recognition.
