Veteran Nigerian entertainer Charles Oputa, popularly known as Charly Boy, has said his two adult daughters do not need his approval over their sexual orientation, explaining that he has chosen to support them despite initially struggling with the revelation.
Speaking in an interview, Charly Boy said his younger daughter came out first, followed later by his elder daughter, who has children.
The entertainer said his initial reaction was difficult but maintained that his daughters, as adults, were ultimately responsible for decisions concerning their personal lives.
He said his priority as a father was maintaining a loving relationship with his children and supporting their happiness rather than attempting to control them.
Charly Boy acknowledged having mixed feelings, saying he would have preferred his younger daughter to have children before making certain personal decisions.
He also reflected on changing approaches to parenting, arguing that parents should increasingly advise their adult children rather than attempt to dictate their choices.
“With millennials and Gen Zs, you don’t tell them what to do; you can only advise them and try to get them to see the logical side of what you’re putting across for them to take, leave or trash,” he said.
According to him, parenting methods based largely on commands and physical punishment are increasingly ineffective with younger generations.
Charly Boy also discussed his relationship with former President Olusegun Obasanjo, whom he described as both a friend and father figure.
He said the relationship developed naturally over the years and that they regularly discuss personal matters, religion and other issues.
The entertainer added that he sometimes seeks Obasanjo’s advice, describing their relationship as combining friendship with a father-and-son bond.
