Nigerian sprinter, Rosemary Nwankwo has described her qualification for the 2027 World Athletics Championships as a defining moment in her athletics career, following Team Nigeria’s strong outing at the World Athletics Relays Championship in Gaborone, Botswana.
Speaking in an interview with the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) Media Hub, Nwankwo said competing on such a global stage and securing qualification ranks among the most significant achievements of her journey in the sport.
“I feel so good because this is my first biggest tournament since I started athletics and I’m so grateful to God,” she said, reflecting on the team’s performance.
The athlete, who played a key role in Nigeria’s relay success, acknowledged that the team had to overcome early challenges, particularly with baton exchanges that initially threatened their chances. However, a renewed focus and determination saw them bounce back to secure qualification.
“What happened here yesterday is nobody’s fault, but thank God we had another opportunity to run again today and we have qualified, so I’m so excited,” she added. “We just told ourselves that we can do this—let’s forget about that and focus on the one ahead of us.”

Nwankwo, a 100 metres specialist known for her consistency on the track, said her mindset during the race was centred on contributing to the team’s success rather than competing individually.
“During the race, I was not looking at anyone. In my head, it was about what I could give to help my team succeed. I just ran with all I had and gave my very best,” she explained.

Looking ahead, the sprinter has set her sights on the upcoming Senior African Championships in Ghana, where she hopes to further cement her place on the continental stage.
