The International Press Institute Nigeria has announced plans to commission a new headquarters and Press Freedom Hub in Abuja on Wednesday, as part of activities to commemorate World Press Freedom Day.
In a statement issued by its Secretary, Ahmed Shekarau, the organisation said the facility will serve as its operational base for advancing press freedom and safeguarding journalists and media professionals across Nigeria.
President of IPI Nigeria, Musikilu Mojeed, described the hub as a strategic platform to strengthen advocacy efforts and respond more effectively to threats facing the media.
“The centre will anchor media advocacy programmes and accelerate efforts to promote press freedom and protect journalists facing threats and censorship,” Mojeed said.
He added that the hub would also function as a venue for periodic assessments of the state of media freedom and journalist safety in the country. According to him, it is expected to drive policy and legal reforms aimed at reinforcing independent journalism, while fostering constructive dialogue between the media and government institutions.

IPI Nigeria is affiliated with the International Press Institute, a global network of editors, media executives and leading journalists spanning more than 100 countries. Established in 1950, the institute has played a prominent role in defending press freedom worldwide for over seven decades.
Registered under Nigerian law, IPI Nigeria was founded in the 1970s by notable media figures, including the late Lateef Jakande, the late Ismaila Isa Funtua, Segun Osoba, the late Wada Maida, and Sam Amuka-Pemu.

Since its establishment, the organisation has remained at the forefront of efforts to promote press freedom, strengthen independent journalism, and enhance the safety of journalists in Nigeria.
