Sporting Lagos opened their 2026 Nigeria National League Super Four campaign on a winning note, securing a hard-fought 1–0 victory over Ranchers Bees in a tightly contested curtain-raiser at the Remo Stars Stadium.
The Lagos-based side asserted early dominance, controlling possession and dictating the tempo from kickoff. Their intent nearly paid off in the 17th minute when Seun Akanji carved out the game’s first clear opportunity, only to be denied by an alert save from the Ranchers Bees goalkeeper.
Sporting Lagos continued to press, with Aliyu Baba providing attacking impetus in the final third. Despite their territorial advantage, they struggled to break down a resolute Ranchers Bees defence that remained organised under sustained pressure.
The breakthrough eventually came in the 40th minute following a well-worked move on the flank. Shola Oladunjoye combined effectively with Akanji, whose pinpoint cross found Alex Leme. The forward rose above his markers to head home what proved to be the decisive goal.
Ranchers Bees responded with renewed urgency after the break, pushing forward in search of an equaliser. However, Sporting Lagos maintained defensive discipline, holding firm to preserve their slender lead in a match defined by tactical organisation on both sides.
Akanji’s influential performance, highlighted by his assist, earned him the Man of the Match award. Speaking after the game, he downplayed individual accolades, attributing the victory to collective effort.
“This award means a lot, but it’s about the team. Everyone gave their all today, and that’s what secured the win. It’s a good start, but we stay focused because there’s more work ahead,” he said.

The result places Sporting Lagos at the top of the early standings, reinforcing their intent to contend strongly for honours in the competition.
The encounter drew prominent figures from across Nigerian football and public life, including former Sports Minister Sunday Dare, sports journalist George Aluo, football administrator Ganiyu Majekodunmi, and former international Felix Owolabi.
Also in attendance were Eric Chelle and his assistant Daniel Ogunmodede.

Attention now shifts to the next fixture, where Doma United will face Inter Lagos under the floodlights at the same venue, as the Super Four tournament continues.
