A former Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, has formally entered the 2027 Nasarawa State governorship race after obtaining the All Progressives Congress (APC) nomination form, setting the stage for a high-stakes intra-party contest.

Adamu’s declaration signals a direct challenge to the political influence of Governor Abdullahi Sule, who is widely believed to have endorsed Senator Aliyu Wadada as his preferred successor.

Speaking after securing the nomination form, the ex-police chief dismissed speculations of stepping down or defecting, insisting he remains firmly in the APC and is prepared to contest the party’s ticket.

He also rejected any suggestion of a predetermined outcome, stressing that the governorship race should be open and competitive within the party.

Adamu expressed confidence in his chances, vowing to defeat any opponent in the APC primary, including candidates perceived to have the backing of the incumbent governor.

The development underscores growing tension within the Nasarawa APC ahead of the 2027 elections, as competing power blocs begin to position themselves for control of the state’s top political office.

Political observers say the entry of the former IGP could reshape the dynamics of the race, given his national profile and previous influence within party structures.

Meanwhile, Senator Wadada, reportedly favoured by Governor Sule, is also expected to be a formidable contender, setting up what analysts describe as a potentially fierce primary battle within the ruling party.

The APC in Nasarawa has in recent years experienced internal divisions, and the emerging contest is likely to test the party’s cohesion as it prepares for another electoral cycle.
