A woman has died after falling from a balcony aboard the Carnival Firenze cruise ship and landing on a deck below while the vessel was sailing near Catalina Island, California, the cruise operator has confirmed.
Carnival Cruise Line said the incident occurred on Monday morning as the ship was underway with the woman travelling alongside her family, who immediately alerted crew members after the fall.
In a statement, spokesperson Julie Leonardi said the company’s support team is assisting the bereaved family.

“Carnival’s Care Team is supporting the guest’s family, and our thoughts and prayers are with them and their loved ones,” Leonardi said.
She added that the appropriate authorities had been notified and law enforcement officers were expected to board the ship when it docked at Catalina Island as part of ongoing investigations.
The Carnival Firenze, a 1,000-foot Italian-themed vessel capable of accommodating more than 5,000 passengers, was en route to Ensenada on Mexico’s Pacific coast at the time of the incident. The ship features themed dining and entertainment spaces as well as “Terrazza staterooms” that offer private deck access.
Carnival Cruise Line has not released the identity of the deceased woman, and the circumstances surrounding the fall remain under investigation.
The tragedy adds to recent scrutiny of cruise ship safety within the industry. Last year, the company made headlines following the death of 18-year-old Anna Kepner aboard the Carnival Horizon, a case that later led to a federal murder charge against her stepbrother, who has pleaded not guilty.

Authorities are expected to provide further details as investigations into Monday’s incident continue.
