The Delta State Police Command has announced the establishment of a specialised Violent Complaint Response Unit (VCRU) as part of a broader operational overhaul aimed at strengthening rapid response to violent crimes and improving accountability within the force.

The initiative, unveiled by the Commissioner of Police, Yemi Oyeniyi, follows a directive from the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, to enhance efficiency, discipline and professionalism across commands nationwide.

According to the Command, the newly created VCRU will focus on handling violent and high-risk complaints, including threats to life, grievous assault and domestic violence. The unit is expected to operate as a rapid response and coordination hub, working closely with divisional offices and tactical teams to ensure swift intervention in critical situations.

Police authorities say the move is a key component of ongoing reforms within the Nigeria Police Force, particularly in addressing public concerns over delayed responses and alleged misconduct.

As part of its rollout, officers selected for the unit underwent a three-day intensive retraining programme. The training covered legal procedures, use of force, arms handling and operational safety.

The Commissioner personally addressed the personnel, urging them to maintain professionalism and respect for human rights while carrying out their duties. Legal experts within the Command also delivered lectures on compliance with extant laws and the responsible use of firearms.

Oyeniyi said the restructuring, which includes the redeployment of personnel and the reorganisation of tactical formations, is designed to deepen professional policing and rebuild public trust.

He warned that acts of negligence, misconduct or abuse of human rights would not be tolerated under the new framework.

The Commissioner has directed Area Commanders, Divisional Police Officers and heads of tactical units to support the new unit fully, signalling a command-wide commitment to the reforms.

Security analysts say the effectiveness of the VCRU will depend on sustained oversight, proper resourcing and adherence to the rule of law, particularly in handling sensitive cases involving violence.
