United States President, Donald Trump has cancelled a planned diplomatic trip to Pakistan by his envoys, dealing a setback to ongoing efforts to broker peace with Iran.

The cancelled visit, which would have seen senior officials including Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner travel to Islamabad, was intended to advance negotiations aimed at ending the protracted conflict between Washington and Tehran.

According to multiple reports, Trump cited a lack of progress in the talks and expressed frustration with the pace of diplomacy. He suggested that continued travel was unnecessary, adding that Iran could initiate contact if it wished to resume discussions.

The development comes amid stalled negotiations despite a fragile ceasefire between the two countries. Diplomatic engagements facilitated by Pakistan had raised cautious optimism, with Islamabad playing a central mediating role between the United States and Iran.

However, recent efforts have failed to produce a breakthrough. Iran has reportedly resisted direct negotiations with the United States, preferring indirect communication through intermediaries, while also rejecting key American demands, including restrictions tied to its nuclear programme.

Iran’s Foreign Minister, Abbas Araghchi, had already held meetings with Pakistani officials before departing Islamabad without securing any concrete agreement, further underscoring the deadlock.

Trump’s decision is widely interpreted as a signal of waning confidence in the current diplomatic track. While the U.S. maintains that dialogue remains possible, the cancellation highlights deep divisions between both sides and uncertainty over the future of the peace process.

The aborted trip also follows earlier unsuccessful negotiations led by U.S. officials in Pakistan, which ended without a consensus on critical issues such as sanctions relief and control of strategic waterways.

Despite the setback, analysts say the door to diplomacy remains open, albeit with diminishing prospects for a near-term resolution.
