The Chairman of Uyo Local Government Area, Uwemedimo Udo, has called on media practitioners to uphold ethical standards in their reportage while sustaining support for the administration of Umo Eno and other leaders from the area contributing to governance in Akwa Ibom State.
Dr Udo made the appeal on Monday while receiving members of the Uyo Media Group (UMG) at the Council Secretariat in Uyo.
During the visit, he announced plans to sponsor members of the group for professional certification at the International Institute of Journalism (IIJ), as part of efforts to strengthen media capacity within the local government.
He explained that the initiative aligns with his administration’s commitment to human capital development, particularly in knowledge-driven sectors such as the media, emphasizing that investment in education and capacity building remains critical to long-term development.
The council chairman, who also serves as the state chairman of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON), disclosed that his administration had earlier provided financial support of ₦1 million each to Uyo indigenes attending Law School. He described the intervention as a deliberate effort to nurture a new generation of professionals capable of representing the interests of the area.
Dr Udo attributed the sustained peace and stability in Uyo since he assumed office in 2020 to prudent resource management and the consistent fulfillment of financial obligations, including regular payment of salaries and entitlements to both legislative and executive arms of the council.
He noted that governance in Uyo remains focused on productivity and development, anchored on the leadership of Governor Umo Eno and the coordination of the Secretary to the State Government, Enobong Uwah, whom he credited for providing political stability across the state.
Highlighting ongoing projects, the chairman listed the renovation of the Community Health Centre at Atan Offot, electrification initiatives across the four clans of Offot, Etoi, Oku, and Ikono, and the installation of solar-powered water schemes to improve access to potable water.
He further revealed that the council is constructing 14 ARISE Compassionate Homes one in each ward. According to him, the first beneficiary in Nsukara Offot has already received a fully furnished home, complete with a borehole and financial support, while other projects are at various stages of completion and expected to be delivered before the end of the year.
In addition, Dr Udo disclosed that ₦100 million has been disbursed to support small businesses in the area, with beneficiaries receiving between ₦1 million and ₦5 million. He noted that minimal external pressure from stakeholders has enabled his administration to focus on delivering tangible benefits to residents.
The chairman also commended traditional rulers in Uyo for their cooperation, describing the traditional institution as vital to maintaining peace and unity. He added that governance in the area is being conducted in the spirit of “one big family.”
Earlier, the Chairman of Uyo Media Group, Patrick Albert, said the group comprises media professionals and social media influencers from Uyo Local Government Area, formed to promote unity, development, and protect the collective interests of the people.
Albert, a former chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Akwa Ibom State chapter, noted that the group has continued to engage stakeholders and highlight the performance of Uyo indigenes in government, including those serving under Governor Umo Eno. He stressed that their commendations are based on verifiable achievements.
He described Dr Udo’s leadership as impactful and visible, urging him to sustain the pace of development while assuring that the group would remain a reliable partner in projecting government activities across traditional and digital media platforms.
In his response, Dr Udo expressed appreciation for the group’s commitment and vision, urging members to remain ethical, responsible, and dedicated to the ideals of journalism. He also encouraged experienced practitioners to mentor younger members, emphasizing the need for collaboration in building a more progressive Uyo for future generations.
