The Nigeria Police Force has recorded a major operational breakthrough with the successful rescue of all victims abducted during the Otukpo kidnapping incident involving passengers of a Benue Links bus on April 15, 2026.
Acting on credible intelligence, operatives of the Benue State Police Command carried out coordinated clearance operations across the Amla Forest corridor and adjoining areas. The operation led to the safe rescue of the remaining 13 victims, including eight students who were traveling to Otukpo to sit for their UTME examinations. In total, all 18 passengers involved in the incident have now been accounted for.
According to the Police, each rescued victim has undergone medical evaluation, is in stable condition, and will be reunited with their families after necessary debriefing.
During the operation, seven suspects were arrested, three of whom have been positively identified as members of the kidnapping syndicate. Investigations are ongoing to track down other accomplices and dismantle the broader criminal network behind the attack. The suspects remain in custody and are being interrogated in line with the law.
The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, psc(+), NPM, commended the officers and personnel of the Benue State Command for their professionalism, resilience, and gallantry in executing the operation. He further directed the intensification of clearance operations within the Otukpo axis to ensure sustained safety and security in the affected communities.
Reaffirming the commitment of the Nigeria Police Force to the protection of lives and property nationwide, the IGP assured Nigerians that ongoing operations will be sustained to strengthen security and restore public confidence. He also urged citizens to continue supporting the Police with timely and credible information to enhance collective safety.
