Patients at the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital are set to benefit from reduced medical costs following a series of reforms introduced by the hospital’s management.

The Chief Medical Director, Chituru Orluwene, disclosed this while marking his first 100 days in office, highlighting key interventions aimed at improving patient care and operational efficiency.

According to him, a committee has been constituted to review and reduce hospital charges, including mortuary fees, in a bid to make healthcare services more affordable. He also announced the introduction of a subsidised feeding programme for in-patients, pegged at ₦5,000 per day, which covers three meals.

Orluwene further revealed that parts of the ongoing reforms include the renovation of sections of the hospital’s Accident and Emergency Unit to enhance service delivery.

Addressing concerns over mosquito infestation within the facility, the CMD noted that the situation has significantly improved following sustained sanitation efforts and regular fumigation carried out over the past months.

In a move to strengthen accountability, he said the hospital has deployed an integrated health management and information system designed to curb revenue leakages and improve transparency.

Additionally, seven committees have been inaugurated to drive the expansion of specialised medical services. These include kidney transplant, bone marrow and stem cell transplant, cancer care, infection prevention and control, emergency response, medical simulation, and medical waste management.

Orluwene also confirmed that the access road leading to the hospital has been rehabilitated, improving ease of movement for patients, staff, and visitors.
