The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr Peter Obi, has denied reports claiming that he asked members of the Nigerian military to reject any salary increase until after the 2027 general election.
Obi described the report as false and said it misrepresented his position regarding the welfare and remuneration of members of the nation’s security services.
The former Anambra State governor clarified a statement posted on his official X account on Tuesday, following reports circulating about his alleged position on the salaries of military personnel.
Obi used the statement to distance himself from the claim and clarify what he said about the issue.
The report attributed a position to Obi in which he was alleged to have urged members of the Nigerian military not to accept any salary increase until after the 2027 general election.
According to the former governor, however, that claim does not represent his position. He rejected the report and maintained that his comments had been misrepresented.
The clarification was issued amid discussions about the welfare and remuneration of security personnel in Nigeria, particularly members of the military who continue to serve in different parts of the country.
Obi’s statement was directed at correcting what he described as an inaccurate account of his position.
Obi, who is seeking the presidency ahead of the 2027 general election, said the report should not be regarded as an accurate representation of his views.
The former Anambra State governor stated that he did not make the alleged request to military personnel regarding a salary increase.
His clarification focused specifically on the claim that he had asked members of the military to reject improved remuneration until after the next general election.
