In a move aimed at strengthening grassroots governance, Bala Mohammed, Governor of Bauchi State, has distributed 186 vehicles to traditional rulers across newly created emirates, chiefdoms, and districts.

The distribution ceremony, held on Monday, saw the governor hand over 14 GMC vehicles, 14 Toyota Hilux trucks, 14 buses, and 144 Toyota Camry cars to district heads and other traditional authorities.

Speaking at the event, Mohammed emphasized that the gesture was not merely symbolic but a strategic effort to empower traditional institutions. He described traditional rulers as critical intermediaries between government and the people.

“The traditional rulers remain the custodians of our values, the link between government and the grassroots, and the voices of the people. Their presence inspires order, while their wisdom sustains peace,” he said.

The governor noted that the vehicles would significantly improve the mobility of the rulers, enabling them to engage more effectively with their communities, mediate disputes, monitor development projects, and collaborate with security agencies.

In addition to the vehicle distribution, Mohammed announced the commencement of construction of new palaces for the recently established emirates and chiefdoms. He pledged that the projects would be completed before the end of his administration.

He also revealed that the state government is reviewing the remuneration and welfare packages of traditional rulers, acknowledging that current provisions no longer reflect the scope of their responsibilities.

On funding, the governor confirmed the enforcement of statutory allocations ranging from 4 to 6 percent from local government revenues to emirates. However, he cautioned against misuse of the funds.

“These resources are public funds entrusted to the institutions, not for personal use. Financial autonomy must go hand-in-hand with accountability,” he warned.

Mohammed further urged traditional rulers to remain within their domains, provide effective leadership, and steer clear of partisan politics.

The initiative follows the signing of a bill in October 2025 that led to the creation of 13 new emirates, one chiefdom, and numerous district units, a move designed to bring governance closer to the grassroots.
