Borno State Governor, Professor Babagana Umara Zulum, has ordered the immediate deployment of 20 luxury electric buses to the public, in a move aimed at mitigating the financial burden of the recent petrol price hike on residents and improving urban mobility.

The buses, officially inaugurated by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on December 20, 2025, were launched alongside a broader fleet that included 3,000 electric bicycles, 500 electric tricycles, and 100 electric vehicles. This comprehensive initiative is part of the state government’s commitment to adopting sustainable and energy-efficient transportation solutions across Borno State.

The rollout, which commenced on Friday, April 3, features a diversified fleet comprising 17 buses with 49 seats each, two buses with 37 seats, and one smaller 28-seater bus. The vehicles are being strategically deployed along major routes within Maiduguri metropolis and its environs to ensure residents have access to comfortable, reliable, and cost-effective transportation.

Equipped with full air-conditioning and designed to be energy-efficient, the buses can cover over 400 kilometres on a single charge, making them suitable for both short intra-city trips and longer inter-district journeys. Governor Zulum emphasized that this initiative complements the state’s existing transportation infrastructure, including the fleet of buses and salon cars previously procured by his administration, to provide a more seamless commuting experience.

Officials noted that the electric buses not only reduce transportation costs for residents but also align with Borno State’s broader goal of promoting environmentally friendly mobility solutions. The government expressed hope that the introduction of these vehicles would enhance commuter convenience, reduce traffic congestion, and encourage the adoption of clean energy transportation across the state.

According to information gathered, this rollout showcases the Zulum administration’s focus on combining technological innovation with practical solutions to address everyday challenges faced by Borno residents, particularly in light of economic pressures resulting from fluctuations in fuel prices.
