The United States and Iran have both declared victory following weeks of intense military confrontation, as a fragile ceasefire continues to hold across the Middle East.
Speaking at the Pentagon, US Defence Secretary, Pete Hegseth said Washington had achieved all its military objectives in the conflict, describing the outcome as a decisive success. He stated that Iran’s missile production capabilities and key defence infrastructure had been significantly degraded, limiting its ability to sustain future military operations.
Hegseth also noted that while Iran retains some capacity to launch limited strikes, its broader strategic capabilities have been curtailed. He added that US forces remain in the region to monitor compliance with the ceasefire and to oversee developments related to Iran’s nuclear programme.
Alongside him, Dan Caine confirmed that operational goals had been met but cautioned that the situation remains fluid, with military readiness still in place should hostilities resume.
The ceasefire followed a last-minute decision by Donald Trump to halt a planned escalation, creating room for negotiations. A key component of the agreement involves the reopening of the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz, a major global energy transit route that had been disrupted during the conflict.
Iranian authorities have also framed the outcome as a victory. In a statement reported by state media, the country’s Supreme National Security Council praised what it described as the resilience of the Iranian people and their regional allies, asserting that significant blows had been dealt to opposing forces over the course of the conflict.
Officials in Tehran indicated that the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz could take place within days, contingent on continued progress in ceasefire discussions. The move is expected to ease tensions in global energy markets, which experienced volatility during the disruption.
Despite the de-escalation, uncertainty remains over the durability of the ceasefire. Diplomatic engagements are expected to intensify in the coming days, with both sides under pressure to translate the pause in fighting into a more lasting framework for stability.
